Französisch-Deutsche Sommerschule 2017

„Self-Assembled Structures with Functional Properties“

23.-28. July 2017, Berlin

Topics:
Experimental characterisation of complex self-assembled structures in solution and at interfaces by means of scattering and reflectometry methods. Theoretical description and modellisation of long-range electrostatic interactions, entropically driven depletion interactions, and the structure of colloidal systems. Kinetics of the evolution of colloidal systems under non-equilibrium conditions.
The different topics will be introduced by comprehensive lectures, which are followed by practicals applying these concepts to relevant situations by using corresponding computer programmes.
In particular, we will address the analysis of scattering and reflectivity data (neutrons and x-rays) for the mesoscopic characterisation of self-assembled structures in bulk and at interfaces. Hands-on applications will be done in order to bring participants to the state of becoming independently able to interpret and analyse experimental data. Similar expertise will be obtained for the case of electrostatic and depletion interactions and the kinetic evolution of self-assembled structures via diffusion-controlled aggregation processes.

General Programme:
First day (Sunday): General introduction lectures, Presentation by the students
Second day: Simulation and analysis of small-angle scattering (SAS) data
Third day: Simulation and analysis of neutron and x-ray reflectivity data
Fourth day: Calculation of electrostatic interactions between charged surfaces in the presence of electrolytes
Fifth day: Calculating depletion interactions
Sixth day (Friday): final lectures, report by participating students (groups of two) of the calculation and simulations performed (20 mins per group)

This email should be accompanied by a CV and a short statement of why this summer school is interesting to you and what would be your expectations on it. A confirmation of participation will be given until 15.6.2017.
It should be noted that no fee will be charged for participation and accommodation (sharing a double room) is covered by the summer school, but all other costs, e. g. travel, etc., have to be covered by the participating student.

Practical Information:

  • Maximum number of participants : 24
  • Participants: Master or PhD students from the fields of chemistry, physics, material science, chemical engineering, ...
  • Practical sessions in a computer room with 12 computers pre-loaded with the software needed. Participants can bring their own laptop, but are responsible for installing software on their own computer)
  • Each participant shall give a 5-6 min talk about his/her own research activities at the beginning, with a focus on aspects that can be solved by (simple) modelling schemes as treated in the practicals in the summer school.
