SEPAWA 2017 Advancement Award

Dr. Leonardo Chiappisi was awarded with a SEPAWA prize in the category "Outstanding Dissertations" for his doctoral thesis on the subject of: "Ionic co-assembly in mixtures of polysaccharides and surfactants”.

The cooperation with our partners from the Chilkoti group (Duke University, NC, USA) is progressing well. Resilin-/Elastin-Like Block Copolypeptides are remarkably well defined copolymers with extremely well tunable properties. Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is a very useful tool to elucidate the structures of their self-assembled aggregates, which is fully controlled by the polymer architecture.

Our long time collaboration with the group of Costas Patrickios from Cyprus University delivers new interesting insights into the properties of double-networks and conetworks. The macroscopic elastic properties of these gels can be correlated with the mesoscopic structure as seen by SANS.

"The surprising formation of water insoluble polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes upon mixing two homogeneous polycation/anionic surfactant and polycation/nonionic surfactant solutions is reported and explained on the basis of calorimetric and structural investigations. In analogy to cononsolvency, the phenomenon was named cononsurfactanty."

Growth of rigid rods occurs via supramolecular assembly of a nonconjugated π-donor π-acceptor monomer and is triggered by a NaCl gradient. The mechanical stiffness of this material is controlled by the local salt concentration and is ion specific. The continuous and well-controlled growth process is exploited to power the directional transport of submillimeter polymer particles.

In the category "outstanding graduates with a master's degree", three awards were awarded a prize. The first prize was awarded to Miriam Simon for her work on "Investigations of the interactions of polyelectrolytes with charged microemulsion droplets", prepared at the Technical University of Berlin.


GDCh 2016 Advancement Award


October 2016

Dr. Leonardo Chippisi was awarded the prize of the GDCh in the field of basic research on detergents and cleaning products.

"In his dissertation "Ionic co-assembly in mixtures of polysaccharides and surfactants", Dr. Chiappisi developed directional insights into the synergy between biopolymers and surfactants that could be used in resource-conserving detergents and cleaning agents of the future. The work proves to be of the highest scientific standard and has been published in international journals."

Miriam Simon received a scholarship of the Klaus-Koch-Foundation for the year 2013.

The Klaus-Koch-Scholarship has been awarded each year since 1963 in remembrance of the birthday of Klaus Koch on 9th December, a former chemistry student fallen in 1940. The scholarhip supports gifted students of the chemistry.

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Findenegg

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Findenegg celebrated his 75th birthday on November 16. Happy birthday!

Prof. Findenegg has been working in the field of physical chemistry, in particular in the range of colloidal systems and interfaces research, at the Technische Universität Berlin since 1991. He was the dean of the chemistry department, spokesman of the collaborative research centre 448 "Mesoscopically organised composites" and he was for many years one of the editors of the journal "Advances in Colloid and Interface Science" before his retirement. Currently, he is taking an active part as a project supervisor in the Intl. Graduate Research Training Group 1524 "SSNI – Self-Assembled Soft Matter Nano-Structures at Interfaces".
