Our Services

Welcome to the Center for NMR Spectroscopy at the Institute of Chemistry! The center is open to all institute staff and can be used by other University members or external persons with prior agreement. We conduct measurements for both institute staff as well as researchers from TU Berlin’s other faculties and research institutions in the region.

Registration

To use the spectrometers in automation mode, you must complete a 40-minute introductory course. You can request a course using the registration form. The introductory course can be arranged for all postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and master’s students from the Institute of Chemistry as well as visiting researchers who are working at the University for at least a number of months. Bachelor’s students are only permitted use in exceptional cases.

If your project requires extensive NMR, you can also complete a tutorial to access the spectrometers for manual measurements. In such cases, please have your supervisor send an email request to the respective NMR director.

TU Berlin staff who do not work at the Institute of Chemistry but have a smaller project, do not need to register. After making arrangements with our team, you can submit your samples for measurement.

Measurements & sample submission

Registered users can independently conduct measurements in automation mode on the sample changers outside of times scheduled for maintenance. The equipment in Room C 17 (AV III 400) and Room C 85 (AV II 400 and AV III 500) is available for the users. Instructions on how to use the sample changers can be found under Downloads. Sample measurements in automation mode can be monitored from within the University network via the IconNMR web interface.

Service measurements (including solid-state measurements) are conducted by the NMR team. Please submit your measurement using our electronic request form. In the case of complex NMR requests, we recommend contacting the NMR team in advance for individual consultation. Registered users must place the sample in the corresponding beaker in the NMR lab. Make sure this is labeled clearly (SampleID, UserID, working group and solvent). If your sample needs to be cooled, you can also place it in a beaker in the fridge located in Room C 69.

If you have permission to conduct manual measurements, you must reserve a time slot using the Faces booking system to use the equipment (Group: TUBNMR).

Software & data access

The software Topspin, used to process NMR spectra from the spectrometer manufacturer Bruker, is currently available free of charge to university researchers and students (non-commercial use). Further details about the conditions and installation files can be found here. You must first register with Bruker. For managed systems at the Institute of Chemistry, you can simply install Topspin via the “Software Shop” (Client Command Installer). Further information about the evaluation software and how to use it can be found under Download & Links.

Measured data can be accessed using the AFS (Andrew Filesystem). The files are generally saved in the corresponding folder of each working group (usually ...\volume\group\NMR). You can use OpenAFS, sFTP, or SSH to access AFS. Please refer to the instructions provided by Campus Management to set up the connection.
