Within a collaboration with the group of Richard Spontak (North Carolina State University, NCSU, USA) the solvent specific swelling behavior of a sulfonated pentablock copolymer of styrene and tert-butylstyrene was studied. A careful small-angle scattering (SAS) analysis made by Kenny Mineart shows how the size of core and corona of these systems depend on the solvent mixture of toluene/isopropanol. This can have relevant implications for controlling the morphology of films cast from these polymers as employed in membrane formation.

In a collaboration with the group of Greg Warr (University of Sydney, Australia) chain-packing effects of self-assembly of mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants, as well as the effect of tetradecanol as cosurfactant were studied by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The catanionic surfactants form small micelles while tetradecanol addition allows to modify the micellar structure largely.

In her work on templating vesicles of mixed zwitterionic and anionic surfactant, stabilised by additional copolymer, Hacer Yalcinkaya could show that the overall size of the vesicles was retained by polymerisation of solubilised styrene. However, the polydispersity of the vesicles is increased, presumably due to the fact that styrene enhances the ageing.

A cooperation with the work group of Reinhard Schomäcker showed some interesting aggregation and surface behaviour of a biosurfactant derived from a plant-oil by yeast fermentation. Such biosurfactants are promising alternatives to currently used synthetic surfactants, which have a different spectrum of properties and they derive from a sustainable resource.

The long time collaboration with the polymer group of Costas Patrickios from Cyprus University lead to another interesting investigation on amphiphilic polymer conetworks. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) shows a high degree of mesoscopic ordering and this is related to the swelling and mechanical properties of these polymer gels, which are interesting materials for applications.

The work of Miriam Simon describes how ionic microemulsion droplets can be complexed with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and how this leads to interesting complexes where the structure depends on the mixing ratio, the Mw of the polyelectrolyte and the size of the microemulsion droplets.

A cooperation with the AK Clever (Dortmund) showed that Pd-coordination complexes of peanut shape can self-assemble to form larger disk-like aggregates. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was able in a unique way to demonstrate this assembly behaviour and this a quite different case of self-assembly in comparison to the normal cases of self-assembly. It also shows that combining different research expertise can lead to quite interesting and unexpected scientific insights.

In the work of Marek Sokolowski the preparation of polymer covered silica nanoparticles of different size with polycation and polyanion layers is described. Interestingly both types of polyelectrolyte layers differ with respect to their properties. The cationic PDMAEMA increases its grafting density with increasing monomer content, while the anionic PMAA forms a thicker polymer layer.

Nanostructured lipid nanocarriers composed of different surfactants can be used as delivery systems for drugs. The structures in solution are complex but can be well reproduced as documented by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). This is a nice outcome of the DAAD sponsored cooperation with our long-time partner in Panjab University, Prof. Surinder Mehta, whose Ph. D. student Rohini Kanwar was the main actor in this study during her one year stay at TUB.

Hacer Yalcinkaya could show in her work that styrene is not only acting as a monomer but also has some cosurfactant character. The mixed aggregates formed can then become polymerized, which happens either under retention of the structure or with systematic changes, which can be explained by the fact that polymerisation renders styrene much less polar and thereby it looses its cosurfactant character.

During her stay in our lab Rohini Kanwar worked on the formation of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) for drug delivery and a part of the outcome of this work was published recently. In it she employed sophorolipids to produce SLNs, characterised them structurally and then determined their release properties for an anti-leprosy drug.

The cooperation with our partners from the Chilkoti group (Duke University, NC, USA) is progressing well. Resilin-/Elastin-Like Block Copolypeptides are remarkably well defined copolymers with extremely well tunable properties. Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is a very useful tool to elucidate the structures of their self-assembled aggregates, which is fully controlled by the polymer architecture.

Growth of rigid rods occurs via supramolecular assembly of a nonconjugated π-donor π-acceptor monomer and is triggered by a NaCl gradient. The mechanical stiffness of this material is controlled by the local salt concentration and is ion specific. The continuous and well-controlled growth process is exploited to power the directional transport of submillimeter polymer particles.

"Dr. Chiappisi erarbeitete in seiner Dissertation “Ionic co-assembly in mixtures of polysaccharides and surfactants” richtungsweisende Erkenntnisse über die Synergie zwischen Biopolymeren und Tensiden, die in ressourcenschonenden Wasch- und Reinigungsmitteln der Zukunft Verwendung finden könnten. Die Arbeit zeugt von höchstem wissenschaftlichem Niveau und wurde in internationalen Journals publiziert."

Am 16. November feierte Prof. Dr. Gerhard Findenegg seinen 75. Geburtstag. Wir gratulieren ganz herzlich.

Prof. Findenegg ist seit 1991 an der Technischen Universität Berlin im Bereich der Physikalischen Chemie, speziell auf dem Gebiet der Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung, tätig. Er war vor seiner Pensionierung Dekan des Fachbereichs Chemie, Sprecher des Sonderforschungbereichs 448 "Mesoskopisch strukturierte Verbundsysteme" [101] und war über viele Jahre hinweg einer der Herausgeber der
Zeitschrift "Advances in Colloid and Interface Science". Aktuell wirkt Prof. Findenegg als Projektleiter am Internationalen Graduiertenkolleg 1524 "SSNI – Self-Assembled Soft Matter Nano-Structures at Interfaces" [102] mit.
