The Zetasizer Nano ZS is a commercial instrument produced by Malvern company which is useful for the characterization of particles (or macromolecules) in both polar and nonpolar liquids within a broad temperature range (2ºC to 90ºC). Fundamental parameters such as the electrophoretic mobility and the diffusion coefficient of the particles can be measured, which enables to determine the zeta potential and the hydrodynamic diameter of the particles respectively. Furthermore, the molecular weight of the particles can be derived from the scattering intensity. The size can be measured within a range from 0.3 nm to 10 µm, and the molecular weight within a range of 1000-2∙10 Dalton.

The size is measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and the molecular weight by static light scattering (SLS). The measurement of the electrophoresic mobility follows the principle of Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV).
