Leonardo Chiappisi was born in Palermo, Italy, on February 28, 1987. He studied Chemistry first at the University of Palermo, where he received his Bachelor of Science. In 2009 he moved to the Freie Universität Berlin, where he got his M. Sc. in Chemistry in 2011. In the same year, he started the Ph.D. Thesis on Ionic co-assembly of polysaccharides and surfactants. Since November 2015 he is Post-doc at the Technische Universität Berlin and Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France) where he is investigating complex soft-matter systems, with an emphasis of the effect of pressure on the self-assembly of polymers, surfactants, microgels, etc.

Research field

My scientific interests are mostly focused on the self-assembly of surfactants, natural and synthetic polymers, and the mixtures of these two materials. In my research strong emphasis is put on the understanding of the thermodynamic forces driving the assembly processes, as well as the characterization of the resulting structures and functionalities. Within the perspective of a sustainable economy, my studies are mostly focused on mixtures of polysaccharides and surfactants as renewable materials, with the final aim of the design of novel, functional systems with application in the field of, e.g., food science, cosmetic, detergent and cleaning agent industries.

I truly believe that only through the scientific progress the current high standards of life quality of western countries can be preserved and extended to developing countries. For this reason, and for the sheer curiosity for the beauty of nature, I am dedicated to the investigation of polysaccharide-based systems.
